We are supposed to know almost every aspect of a project while have no or litte say over any of them. This is safety professionals and I doubt,from time to time, about if it is a good choice to specilzie on safety. Dont know how do you feel about this professsion besides 苦差?
Really depend upon what and how you define a ideal professional - your own philosophy. To be realistic, each professional has something 'good' and 'bad'. Perhaps it's fair to say that eventually each professional will need to develop communication, management and leadership skills to some extent, even though you are purely a scientist. From that point, I cannot see any difference between safety engineer and any other disciplinary engineer.
The slight difference I can only feel about is that the safety engineer requires the holistic view of systems engineering as well as a very broad domain knowledge, which may not be required by other engineers, if we put aside the corresponding specialised knowledge such as safety engineering.
To be honest, safety engineer was not my dream job. 阴差阳错，入错行。希望你不要跟我一样。
